default
Posted on Wed, 13 Jan 2016
Question: Hi, My daughter is 46 years old and has a fever - not sure maybe 101-102, very bad headache for 2-3 days now, and is
very weak all over her body. The first night she woke up to a puddle of sweat more than ever before. She usually is extremely healthy and never gets sick. She did take an Advil and felt better, and headache went away... Today she finally ate a sandwich as was feeling better and drinking water and orange juice but late today headache back again and feeling extremely tired and lethargic. She took another Advil but doesn't seem to work. Body hot and sweating and feeling terrible. Last week before she got sick she stayed up all night working on a projects and kept going...She has overdid it! She is usually extremely healthy...healthy diet no drugs, no alcohol, etc. All organic. If the headache is there tomorrow should she see a Dr. She is not throwing up, but cannot eat as she feels she would throw up. Is an aspirin better to take? She does not take any prescription drugs. So unusual sweating, bad headache, very sore all over her body. Is aware and can talk, but extremely weak. Lies in fetal position as back hurts also.

Brief Answer:
she has to be examined by a doctor

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

it sounds like influenza but no diagnosis can be made without clinical examination to exclude other causes. Fever and headache for example, require ruling out meningitis which is a far more severe disease than influenza. Let me add though, that your description does not remind me of meningitis because the headache in meningitis is very severe and constant.

Pneumonia and other important diseases will have to be excluded as well.

If it's the flu (influenza) then taking aspirin is not recommended because there is some risk (albeit not high in adults) for liver damage during the course of the disease. Advil is a very potent NSAID and should make her feel better (and reduce her temperature also). Normally doctors prefer to prescribe paracetamol (acetaminophen) because it's a much safer drug when used properly.

So in conclusion, I believe that she has to be examined by her doctor as soon as possible.
