Question: My daughter who is now 46 used to take Cylert and it was an effective medicine to help stimulate her mind to be able to stay awake. Several year ago we were told it no longer was safe to use. We immediately took her off of it but we need an alternative as she sleeps way to much and we can't seem to keep her alert.
she is not taking any other medication for her problem.

Brief Answer:
There are a few concerns but the individual case needs to be considered

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. I need clarification of whether she is on Cylert (Pemoline) is a stimulant drug. The primary concern on long term use is liver failure. Other concerns include insomnia (difficulty sleeping), nervousness, headache, drowsiness, mild depression, nausea, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, decreased appetite (anorexia), weight loss, rapid heart rate, and rash. If none are present on giving the medicine, there is nothing to worry. It would be advisable to discuss with a psychiatrist about whether it is a good idea to go for the medication.

This drug is not usually used nowadays. Sleeping too much is just something reverse to the effects of this medication and it indicates that a stimulant medication like this is needed. You need to get your daughter evaluated by a psychiatrist so that he can prescribe a stimulant medication that is right for her. Stimulant medications including amphetamines (e.g., Adderall) and methylphenidate (e.g., Ritalin and Concerta) are often prescribed.

Her thyroid profile also needs to be checked since low thyroid levels could also give rise to a similar presentation.

Let me know if I could help further.

Regards
