Suggest Medication For Rheumatic Fever

Posted on Tue, 24 Nov 2015
Question: My mom aged 50 has underwent surgery for mitral stenosis following rheumatic fever in the 2002. The doctor at the government general hospital advised her to continue with these tablets for lifelong. Pentids- 800 mg, digoxin, lasix and potassium chloride solution. Last year may 2014 we took her to a private cardio consultant for check up. He stopped all the tablets and prescribed only telma h tablet. Now I ve been reading articles regarding this and finally I feel pentids( penicillin) should be taken life long!!! I am worried. Need expert opinion.. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
No worry at this age

Detailed Answer:
Hi friend
Welcome to Health Care Magic

That is Penicillin. It is given for prophylaxis of Rheumatic Fever – the cause of the Mitral Valve Disease. Generally, it is continued till about 25 or 30 years of age only… and then stopped.
It is safe to stop at this age.
Now, she continues to need antibiotic-prophylaxis only to prevent Infective Endocarditis… that is a combination of antibiotics before any interference - surgery, dental extraction and so on
Keep follow up routinely and regularly and in case of any suspected infection or complicating illness

Good luck
God bless you

Thank you so much doctor for the answer. she was taking telma h for the past 1 and half years and now the doctor has changed the drugs. Lasilactone and metosartan.. So it is not like stopping penicillin can cause rheumatic heart problem again?? that is what I was worried about!!

Brief Answer:
Safe to stop penicillin

Detailed Answer:
Hi

The switch to the new combination drugs seems scientifically appropriate
Most of us would have done that.
She seems to be in good hands…

Rheumatic fever is extremely uncommon / practically unknown at this age
The heart involvement is from subsequent reaction from the infection over the years and that is why, it is stopped at this age…
