Brief Answer:
She needs a full course of medication.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. At 12 years of age, and average build, she can take a full dose of amoxicillin 500 mg. I would recommend that she is given a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid 625 mg for a sever sore throat.

2. Supportive medication such as an anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory medication, medicated oral rinse (such as Betadine) and steam inhalation should be given under the supervision of a local doctor.

3. If the loss of voice does not recover soon, a short course of steroids will help after the other symptoms are controlled.

4. Rest, warm water, bland food and home remedies such as turmeric in warm milk, honey and ginger should be taken.

5. Viral infections tend to run their course. If there is no improvement in 48-72 hours, get her throat examined and if necessary get a throat swab and routine blood tests done.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
