Suggest Medication For Tapeworm Infection During Pregnancy

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Oct 2014
Question: Hi
My wife is 5 months pregnant and has a tapeworm but the doctors here (Oman) say there is no medication (Praziquantel) for her in the country. Drontal Plus is available from the local vets and has this in it but I'm not so sure it would be safe.
Any idea what we can do as we are both very concerned and the doctors here don't seem to care.

Brief Answer:
Niclosamide can be tried

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing..
I understand your concern..

The drug of choice for tapeworm infestation is praziquantel. But if it is not available niclosamide can be used as an alternative drug. It belongs to category B, which means it can be given in pregnancy and no adverse effect noted in animal study. Consult your doctor for the prescription. It might cause some allergic reaction in some patients , so should be taken under medical supervision.

As such I am not very sure of dose and other ingredients of and therefore I am unable to comment on its safety. In this context, I wouldn't approve it for human use.

Does she have any symptoms of tapeworm infestation? How was it detected?

Hope I have answered your query. feel free to ask any doubts.. Good day..
