Suggest Medication That Can Supress Prostrate Enlargement
Question: I have had minor prostrate enlargement for last few years and some times I need to urinate 3 times in the night. I had met a radiologist recently who did my ultrasound and he said I need to consult a urologist who might recommend some medicines which will reduce this enlargement and there may be no need for any surgery in his opinion. He mentioned Urimax 0.4mg - one per day and this was also confirmed by my brother in law who is a doctor but not a urologist. So I thought to ask an expert's opinion. Question is can medication supress the enlargement avoiding surgery at a later date ??

Thanks for your query,based on the facts and Scanning report that you have posted it appears that you have been detected to have Grade one enlarged prostate.
Enlargement of prostate is very common after the age of 55 years .
Your ultrasound Scanning has revealed grade one enlarged prostate with significant post void residue (45 ml).
Please consult qualified Urologist for clinical and Digital Rectal examination and get following basic tests done .
1) Serum PSA.
2) Uroflowmetry.
Please take Tamsulosin (Urimax)along with Dutasteride once daily. This will help to reduce the size of the prostate, nocturnal frequency and improve urine flow. This is a prescription drug, discuss with your doctor about the same.
It is difficult to predict about the need for surgery in future .It entirely depends upon the progress of the enlargement of prostate and gravity of obstructive urinary symptoms at that particular time.

Dutasteride : is is Dutasteride Soft Gelatine capsule 0.5 mg along with Urimax 0.5 mg togehter to be taken : its around rs 545/- for 30 capsules - Is it the right one you mentioned since chemist was not clear about it.
How long should I take both these medicines ???
I will check on these two tests you have mentioned next time I go to the hospital and decide accordingly.
