Question: Hi i am 52yrs. Have been sufering rom hypertension since age 28yrs . i have a family history of hypertension. In 2013 suffered from uncontrolled hypertension.
Since then have used different medication however BP is now under control . It is averaging 120/80.
However since this year i feel a heaviness on the left side of my chest. Did a ECG which was said to be good.
In November 2015 did an echogram of heart which stated the following
1 VERY MILD HYPERTROPHY SEPTUM
2 VERY MILDLY DIALATED LEFT ATRIUM
3 NORMAL OTHERWISE
Could you advise on present medication. Is there any medication that can be used to assist an enlarge heart? Are any actions or work should i avoid.
I am also a teacher for the past 32yrs

Brief Answer:
Atenolol and Lisinopril have favourable effects on the heart

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,

Very mild hypertrophy of septum and a little enlarged left atrium are common findings in hypertensive patients and are not significant.
The most important thing in this case is prevent further hypertrophy and enlargement of left atrium. For this purpose we need controlled arterial hypertension.
Some medications such as Atenolol and Lisinopril have favourable effects on heart. Besides preventing further hypertrophy and enlargement they also can cause decrease in hypertrophy and left atrial dimensions.
So I think you shouldn't worry, you are on the right way.

Hope I could help you

Wishing you good health

Brief Answer:
Optimal heart rate while taking Atenolol

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back,

If you have resting heart rate 55-63 bpm, which increases with physical activity, then it is normal. Also you take Atenolol, which decreases heart rate. Heart rate around 55-62 bpm while taking Atenolol is optimal.

Wishing you good health
