Posted on Mon, 2 Jun 2014
Question: My sister hase been experiencing the muscle wasting symptoms listed below. These were triggered by a bizarre reaction to a thyroid condition. The Synthroid dose was adjusted and the thyroid has now stabilized. The symptoms experienced are:

- Feeling loss of muscle mass through out body (eg in the hips, knees, shoulders, elbows, and all other joints)
- Some muscles are now so fine, they feel like threads
- Muscle twitches, especially in the neck and throat areas
- Muscle knotting, mostly in the knees

My questions are as follows:
Can you please advise what medication is required besides synthroid to recover muscles rapidly? What foods/diet protocol is recommended to help with recovery?
What else should be done to help with recovery from this condition.

Brief Answer:
Muscle wasting

Detailed Answer:
I am sorry to learn about the thyroid reaction.

Muscle wasting of severe nature of the the degree that you are describing must not be managed without medical inputs.

First of all, this requires a detailed evaluation in person by a neurologist to determine the cause of this problem.

There are several causes of muscle wasting and treatment depends on the cause. Just simply proceeding with nutritional and physical rehabilitation will not address the underlying problem.

Failing to attend to the root cause will antagonize the other efforts to improve muscle strength.

There are 'neuromuscular' conditions that have specific causes and treatments and so this needs to be ascertained.

Taking the correct synthroid dose helps but it is not the only thing that will allow muscles to recover normally. Generally the TSH target is 0.5 to 2.4 with free T4 in the mid to high normal range.

Obviously, good nutrition and exercise therapy are vital to muscle strengthening but the symptoms you are describing merit a more formal assessment of the individual to arrive at the correct diagnosis first
