Suggest Medicines Increased Heart Rate Inspite Of Using Metoprolol

Posted on Fri, 9 May 2014
Question: I take amlodipene now and it does a great job of finally lowering my very high blood pressure, but..... my doctor won't give me something that JUST lowers my heart rate; and all the other medications (metopprolol, and others have been doing just the opposite of what they are supposed to do) They RAISE my bllod pressure through the roof AND raise my Heart rate. I like the way Amlodipene works BUT my chest is uncomfortable (heart-angina) with a heart rate aboce even 70, yet my doctor won't keep it simple and justgive me something to lower my heart rate in addition to the amlodipene.....WHY?

Brief Answer: 70 is in normal range. Body reflex mechanism Detailed Answer: Hi XXXXXX, I went through the query and understood your concern. Heart rate from 60-upto 100 is normal and no need to worry. 70 is well with in normal range. Amlodepine, as you told will do great job in reducing BP acting by vasodilatation. Our body has reflex mechnisms which will help in maintaining all our body functions at normal. So in some situation when the body sence for more blood supply is required to vital organs then the heart rate increases on its own (exercise, anxiety etc). Amlodepine (a vasodilator), diuretic and drugs acting on angiotensin pathway are first line of drugs to maintain BP and you are rightly on amlodepine. This will control BP and if not we can add other drug to it. Beta blockers like atenolol, metoprolol should act on heart reducing the heart rate but duet to reflex mechanism our body senses through BP and keeep the heart rete normal. You shoul worry only is pulse rate/heart rate raise more than 100 even at resting time. Otherwise adhere to your drugs with regular exercise and diet. Hope this information helps you.
