Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

There are several possibilities when considering insomnia treatment.

One possibility are nonbenzodiazepine receptor agonists like Zolpidem or Zaleplon. They are among the most commonly used options, are taken about 30 minutes before going to sleep. Have a duration of action of less than 8 hours.

Another possibility is that of sedating antidepressants like mirtazapine or amitriptyline. They are preferred when there is a base issue of anxiety or depression at the root of insomnia as they are also good antianxiety medication.

Antihistamines like diphenhydramine are another option, sold as over the counter medicine. While they are sold as over the counter they do have potential for side effects like sedation on the following day.

Another possibility for insomnia is also a medication called suvorexant which has been introduced only lately, which antagonizes the action of a neurotransmitter called orexin which promotes wakefulness.

So these are some options which you discuss with your doctor. Choice depends also on the cause of the sleep difficulty because if there are issues like anxiety and depression they should be addressed as well.
