Question: BEST NATURAL SUPPLEMENTS FOR WEIGHT LOSS
doctor
Answered by Kathy Shattler (36 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Hello and Welcome to HealthcareMagic

Detailed Answer:
The supplements that work best with caloric deficit and exercise are Berberine,
ECGC, lactobacillus plantarum, a gradual increase in psyllium fiber for appetite control, capsaicin (chili peppers, hot peppers)-very thermogenic, quercetin, fucoxanthin, chlorogenic acid. These are the most evidence based ones I am doing research on.

As with medications, all supplements should be cleared with your personal physician who knows your health history. And remember, weight loss doesn't happen just with a pill, it constitutes a lifestyle change for maintenance of weight loss.

An individualized approach with the guidance of a good Dietitian may help your success considerably.

I wish for your success. Please feel free to write me again.

Brief Answer:
Good afternoon and welcome back

Detailed Answer:
Before I answer your query, I will review complete history available to me. I see you are a young 82 year old with some health complications making your choice of a weight loss supplement tricky.

For one, I anticipate part of your weight problem is bloat. You are on a blood pressure medication that requires a low calorie, low sodium diet. Your sodium intake should remain lower than 2,300 mg/day. If interested, you can ask another query about low-sodium diets and I can send you a diet plan for that.

You asked "am I aware of any weight loss protocols that have been tracked and effective" which is different than supplements. The protocol is to follow a low-calorie diet designed to take off 2 pounds per week through the combination of a
weight reduction nutrition plan and exercise. In your case, if you were my patient, I would suggest "Sit Fit" videos and a balanced diet probably in the range of 1500 calories per day, but would need to be calculated based on your height, age, frame size, activity level, and current weight.

The supplements I mentioned all come from research that has been tracked and found to be effective, but the ones I would recommend for you to discuss with your doctor are these: Berberine, a chemical found in several plants including European barberry, goldenseal, goldthread, Oregon grape, Phellodendron, and tree turmeric. People take berberine for heart failure.
to lower blood sugar in individuals with Type II diabetes and to lower weight.

Next, ECGC is the active compound in green tea, but the amount taken has to be sufficient to interfere with fat deposition. So, if you choose a more natural way instead of taking ECGC in a supplement, try drinking 5 cups of clear strong green tea (no milk/sweeteners, just tea). And yes, it has been shown to be effective in facilitating weight loss, but there is no magic pill.

Psyllium fiber decreases appetite if portion control and hunger are problems. Mix some up and take before meals. Must gradually increase to avoid gas.

In summary, a low calorie meal plan, regular exercise above what activity you are now doing to equal 150 minutes per week minimum, gradually introduce more fiber in diet (goal 25 grams/day), ask doctor about taking Berberine along with your other medications, drink 5 cups of green tea per day every day (unless you have problems with kidney stones) or take an ECGC supplement daily, follow a 2300 mg low sodium diet and referral to a dietitian for individualized meal planning if desired.

Yes, Berberine has been tested in human clinical trials. ECGC has been tested in human clinical trials. I am an independent researcher as well as a clinician. Just remember, all need to be coordinated with your healthcare team. From the information I have, the plan I mentioned seems to be the most effective, yet safe plan for you.

I truly hope I have answered your question this time. If not, please feel free to contact me again for a follow-up clarification.
