Posted on Thu, 9 Jun 2016
Question: I accidentally kicked a very hard surface and my 1st metatarsal phlange is swollen, distorted and painful. Can walk, but Some slight numbness and tingling while walking. this happened 36 hours ago. Should I just wait it out with ice, NSAIDs, etc? Should I use tape for proper healing? Do I need further care?

Brief Answer:
You can wait for a few days.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
I have seen the image attached. The swelling is mild and no visible hematoma is there. Any bone injury is less likely. You can wait and continue with ice and mild pain killers. You can tape the area and keep the foot elevated while resting. In case the pain and swelling persist or increase after a week then do consult your physician and get an X-ray done.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.

Thanks Dr. Tayal,

I feel reassured. (The patient will live!)

Is there a certain way to tape it for improved healing? Above the joint or below or across? I read something about taping for "turf toe" so it didn't have restricted movement after healing. Is this something I should worry about or apply?

Thanks. It's great to get your opinion so quickly and easily!

Brief Answer:
Can be taped across the joint.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
You can tape across the injured joint to avoid any painful movement. You can leave it as it is also. No need to worry.
Hope my answer is helpful.
