Question: My wife just had an episode of 185 heartbeat, lasted 15 minutes. Came on rapidly, ended rapidly. She has fairly advanced emphysema, was in the hospital last week, but her blood oxygen was OK. Is this dangerous?

Brief Answer:
Yes, this can be dangerous.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.

Yes, this can be dangerous.

Heart rate of 185 is very high and this is due to cardiac arrhythmias especially in patients with emphysema.

So, we should definitely rule out cardiac arrhythmias like supra ventricular tachycardia (SVT) and atrial fibrillation and flutter.

So, please consult cardiologist and get done EKG, 2D-echocardiography, stress test and Holter monitoring (24 hours continuous monitoring of ecg) for the diagnosis of arrhythmia.

Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further.
Wishing good health of your wife.
Thanks
