Question : My five year old sugar level was down at 3.3 the other morning after being sick with diareha and vomitting. Been checking since and the sugar were in normal range. Should i be worried?
Brief Answer:
ORS is the mainstay of treatment
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
A blood sugar level lower than about 3.3 mmol/L (60 mg/dL) is called hypoglycemia. Anything below the present level would be a cause for concern. You need to give your child ORS (oral rehydration solution) to make up for the fluid and salts lost during diarrhea and vomiting. If the child becomes lethargic you should rush him to a hospital at the earliest. You need to monitor the urine output rather than blood sugar. If the child does not pass urine for more than 6 hours, the child is in fluid depleted state and you would need to rush to the ER.
Let me know if I could help further.
