Question: My wife just came back from a trip to XXXXXXX where she developed intestinal infection and was prescribed Norflox (not Norflox TZ). After coming back to the US she has developed diarrhea and having frequent runs. What medication she should take to control the symptom ( the frequent runs to the toilet) ?

Brief Answer:
How often are these runs?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these frequent runs to the toilet. I will like to know what the frequency and nature is. Also, are there any other symptoms like abdominal pain, fevers? For now, the most important thing is for her to drink as much fluids as needed. This will help replenish the fluid loss. Diarrhea doesn't kill unless she fails to drink enough rehydration solution.

For now, let her drink as much water as needed. Provide responses to the above questions and I will get back to you with more insights and directives on how to do so.

I hope to hear back from you. Until then, I wish you well.

She had about twenty frequent runs in the early evening hours which has since subsided. Yes, she was having cramps accompanied by occasional abdominal pain when she was having the runs. She took her fourth dose of Norflox (Norfloxacin) this morning. BTW, she took some dairy product this afternoon. I have the following questions :
1. Should she continue with Norflox ? Afraid she might develop drug resistance if she stops taking the medication before completing the full course.
2. If she has further runs, can she be given anti-diarrhea medicine like Immodium to treat the diarrhea symptomatically.
3. Should we continue with the Probiotics - Florastor.

Brief Answer:
Let her continue with norflox!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this follow up question.

1. Let her continue with the Norflox as prescribed.

2. She is most likely not going to have so many numerous runs again. Should that happen, no immodium and she should simply continue to drink as much as needed to compensate for the losses.

3. Continue with the probiotics.

I hope this helps. Let me know how she is doing and whether there is something more we need to be doing at this time.
