Question: I have had enlarged tonsils, specifically one, for about one month now. I had strep in the past year; however, this time, the ONLY symptom is difficulty swallowing. There is zero pain, zero fatigue, or any other typical symptoms that come along with enlarged tonsils. My doctor prescribed Amoxicillin 875/125 twice a day for 10 days; however, we are now on day four with little success.

Brief Answer:
You don't need antibiotics

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Since you do not have any symptoms, there is no need for antibiotics.

In my patients with similar complaints I start them on chlorhexidine mouth gargles 3 to 4 times a day and wait for a week for the size to reduce.

I would also normally ask for a blood test called total and differential count to look for any infection

If chlorhexidine is not available in suggest you gargle with warm salt water 3 to 4 times a day.

The enlargement may be due to a local infection and can be managed with gargles

If you develop pain or fever then the antibiotics may be required

Take care
