Question: Hi dr,
My 1.5 month old is having lot of gas due to which she is taking less feeds. She's taking feeds every 2-3 hours but the duration of onetime feed is generally 5 mins. Earlier the duration was 10-15 mins. I am worried...please tell me how to get rid of her gastric problem. She has not peed since last 3 days now. Her paed suggested medigas drops which I am giving when needed but not much of a difference. Please tell me due to this gas problem is she not loosing out on her feeds?

Brief Answer:
Breast milk is the best option.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Let me assure that if your child is breast fed, you need not worry about the gas. All you need to do is to continue breast feeding the baby and that will take care of everything. If the child is not exclusively breast fed, you need to try to shift to breast feeding. Formula feeds are difficult to digest and hence may leave undigested matter in the intestines. These undigested food matters are degraded by intestinal bacteria to produce the gases that you mention.

The solution is breast feeding. If you do that, she will not lose out on her feeds. Monitor the number of times she passes urine. If it is more than 6 times in 24 hours, you can rest assured that she is getting enough feeds and you need not worry.

Hi dr
Thanks for your reply. She is exclusively on breastfeed and for sure passes urine more then 6 times in a day. But inspite of being breastfeed she has lot of gas and its smelly too. What can be the reason behind this? Please tell me what should be done

Brief Answer:
You need not get concerned.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. I understand that the gas is foul smelling but you need not pay heed to it. In case she is exclusively breast fed, there is nothing to worry. Her gastrointestinal tract is not yet mature enough and hence is unable to digest the milk completely thus leaving undigested matter for intestinal bacteria to degrade. Gradually as her intestines mature, the problem will resolve. Nothing needs to be done about it.

Regards
