Question: I have low blood pressure but have been prescribed Cartia Diltiazem 120 MG 2X per day. I have been tired but my heart fluttering has disappeared. Should I be worried about my low blood pressure? What I'mean reading is this drug should not be taken if you have low blood pressure.

Brief Answer:
?? Cartia prescribed for hypertension or angina, hopefully angina

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Cartia (with active ingredient diltiazem) can be used for hypertension and angina. I understand your concern, as this is primarily an anti-hypertension drug, but there is a little information that you should know before we reach our conclusion.

For hypertension: Doses starting from 180 mg and going up to 480 mg daily
For angina: Doses start from 120 mg going up to 180 mg per day.

So, in my opinion the low use given to you has been prescribed primarily for angina, and not for your blood pressure. Although, as we know that it has anti-hypertensive properties, I would recommend monitoring your blood pressure using a Holters ambulatory device for a duration of 24 hours, followed by 3 times daily check on blood pressure levels for a duration of 3-7 days, just to make sure you are not going into hypotension. Also speak to your doctor about an adequate diet to help prevent hypotension.

But if your doctor has not prescribed you cartia for angina, then a review into the prescription will be mandatory.

I hope you find my response helpful. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
