Question: Dear doctor,

I have one of my niece who lives in Iraq been seeing a doctor for hearing difficulty, she made few hearing tests which I enclosed with this message. The doctor there told her that hearing aid can help her, but she is too embarrassed to use visible hearing aid, then they suggested an internal hearing aid. I would like to ask your second opinion about how easy and how successful this operation or if there are any other options?
By the way the date of birth on the test result is incorrect, instead of 1976 she is 1996. 20 years old

Thanks
doctor

Brief Answer:
Moderate SNHL.. Hearing Aid. BAHA Trial.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. She has moderate SNHL.

2. A hearing aid will be the best option.

3. A smaller hearing aid is a good option if she does not want the hearing aids to be visible.

4. A BAHA (Bone Anchored Hearing Aid) is another option.

5. No operation for SNHL is possible.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Brief Answer:
BAHA is easy to try and implant. The implant requires surgery.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. The BAHA device consists of an outer detachable processor and an inner surgically placed implant. These have magnets to attach them through the skin (scalp).

2. The BAHA device can be used with a specially designed hair clip or soft elastic band. This is usually for a trial to let the patient understand the hearing improvement. These can also be used for a short time in very young children or when recovering from surgery.

3. With the implant placed in the skull by a simple surgery, the BAHA device is magnetically coupled across the skin (scalp), enabling it to transmit the sound vibrations better resulting in a 30 % improvement in clarity as compared to a softband or clip.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
