Suggest Remedies For Muscle Weakness In The Upper Arms

default
Posted on Fri, 5 May 2017
Question: I can move my left arm side to side but cannot lift over my head due to muscle weakness in the upper half of my arm. My muscles in that upper arm area are tender when pressed. I have a history of elevated blood pressure and have been under recent stress. No history of stroke or heart attack. No other known stroke symptoms, just arm problem for several hours. I had shoulder muscle tightness on my left side prior to the arm problem. The muscle tightness started 6 hours ago ad has improved. The arm problem started 4 hours ago. Should I go to the ER or wait ?

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that a stroke can not be excluded( considering your cardiovascular risk factors).

Anyway, a muscular spasm can not be excluded either.

For this reason, I would recommend going to the ER for a careful physical exam and some tests:

- a brain CT scan
- a resting ECG
- a shoulder Xray study
- muscular enzymes
- complete blood count.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr.Iliri
