Question : I have had swelling above my knees around my ankles. I saw a rheumatoid Arthritis dr. Labs were negative for
RA, positive for inflammation. I was put on prednisone a few weeks ago. The swelling & pain went down fairly quickly.
However, the symptoms reappeared. Dr. took me off prednisone this week. The pain in my knees is about a 9.
Future tests are labs, CRP, Non cardiac inflammatory; Sed rate ESR, Total Vitamin D; uric acid and Imaging of both knees. I am in a great deal of pain. Am I being tested for gout? Is there a pain relief over the counter or could the Dr. prescribe anything? She did say I would go thru withdrawal from prednisone. I was on it for about 3 weeks.
Am I being tested for gout?

Brief Answer:
Yes you are being tested for gout .

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,

Thank you for posting your query on HCM.

Well looking into your problem I would like to tell you that , Uric acid levels are being done to test for gouty arthritis . Although it looks more of degenerative arthritis to me considering your age also but first we need to see all these tests that the doctor has prescribed before reaching a diagnosis. You can take paracetamol or tramadol for pain relief if there is no contraindication for the same . They may bring pain relief but swelling will not subside with that . For that something like Advil is required , may be your doctor will consider that after seeing your blood tests .

Take care.

Dr. Shruti
