Question: I have been experiencing pain in both shoulders, arms, wrists, hands, knees, thighs over the past six months.....sometimes knees hurt too. I am 67 and male. I have been active most of my life playing golf, football, softball, basketball, hiking and camping. I am 5' 10" and weigh 205 lbs which I have been at for the past 30 years! I get really stiff after sitting after an hour or two. I have never had this before. The stiffness goes away after I walk 20 ft or so. I was diagnosed with Diabetic in 2000 taking 3- 750 mg Metforman tablets daily....At night while in bed, I get very weak and can hardly get out of bed in the morning,,,,

Brief Answer:
Osteoarthritis likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
From your symptoms it seems that your joints have undergone osteoarthritic changes. These are basically age related degenerative changes in the weight bearing joints like knees and is characterized by joint pain and stiffness. Upon movement the stiffness gradually relives. Sometimes application of hot pads can make the movement possible.
The treatment options include pain killers, hot fomentation, lubricating agents like glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin , dycerin, etc and some life style modifications and physiotherapy.
Right now you can start taking calcium supplements 500mg each twice daily. Do start with vitamin D3 supplements also in case you are deficient. This will take care of your mild symptoms in 3-5 days.
You can start with walking and aerobic fitness exercises, quadriceps strengthening, patellar tapping, lateral heel wedges, etc- under the guidance of your physiotherapist.
A Big No to Stair case, squatting postures, any chair which has a sitting platform lower than your knees.
I also encourage you to consult an orthopedician for physical examination. A few blood tests, X-rays of the knee, CT / MRI scans of the joints will help us diagnose the condition and help us in choosing the best approach of treatment.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.
