Question: Hi doctor. I am xxxxxx, 26 year old. I was born with single ventricle heart defect. I had only PA banding and no other surgeries. I am doing fine and have no symptom. I have my regular cardiologist checkups.
But from past 2 months I have become depressed and anxious about my condition and sometimes i fear that something could happen to me. I tried to divert my mind and i feel comfortable when i am around people and at office. Once i am back home, i feel lonely and all negative thoughts come in. Though i am fighting hard and my girl friend has been a great support for me.
My actual fear is for her. I want to marry her and give her a normal life, but the condition i have is making me overthing these things and is disturbing my mind. I have inquired with many doctors if i am alright and everyone told me that i am perfectly fine and can marry and lead a good life with my partner. Yet that doesnt give me satisfaction. My girlfriend does know about my congenital problem and is still ready to marry me.
Please suggest me ways to fight this depression and lead a normal life with her?
Thank you
doctor

Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

Although there is no shortcuts to remain happy and elated but I am delineating dew of the strategies which might help you.

1. Regular cardiac check up to make sure that everything is ok

2. Regular physical exercise, preferably aerobic to maintain good secretion of endorphins and good feeling

3. Having least possible time alone

4. Better connection with friends and family

5. Having quality time rather than sitting idle with community members and colony members

6. Avoidance of high Calorie foods such as Pizza, burger and specially fast foods- contain high degree of oxidants and cause more stress

7. Having plenty of water - at least 3-4 litres per day

8. Finding meaning with your work- Consider your work meaningful rather than part of duty

9. Meditation and yoga

10. Development of new hobbies and interests- and definitely maintain older ones

The above strategies likely to increase your positive attitude and your well being as there are little oxidants and plenty of antioxidants to reduce oxidative stress.

In case this much already tried we can think of some medication although I will prefer the above strategies before moving to medication option.

I hope this assists you.
