default
Posted on Mon, 8 Aug 2016
Question: I have pain in right buttock from last year. It is kind of upper middle part of buttock. It is extreme when pressed. Due to this I have pain in right leg from top to bottom. Home based Heat or cold therapy does not help. My doctor advised me to do some stretches. So far no improvement. I am slight overweight and my job involves lot of time sitting in a chair. What this could be? What are the treatment options?

Brief Answer:
Mild disc prolapse likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Pain on one side of the spine that is radiating down the leg is likely to be related to a minor disc prolapse that is causing a nerve root compression.
The main treatment of such problem is bed rest along with pain killers and muscle relaxants. Muscle relaxants can help with your symptoms if used in appropriate dosage in combination with a potent analgesic. You can get these prescribed from your orthopedician.
Local analgesic gels and hot fomentation may provide a short term relief. You can use analgesic gels like Volini gel. Exercise is not advisable in the times of acute pain.
Using an LS contour belt of appropriate size might be helpful in providing support to back muscles.
Physiotherapy also plays a major role in treating such conditions. But it is started only after the acute pain subsides.
Discuss with your orthopedician and an appropriate treatment can be planned depending on the response to medical drugs.
I hope this answers your query.

Thanks for your reply.

Some friend who is studying MBBS told me it could be sciatica. I am not sure.

Is your advise about analgesic and muscle relaxant permanent solution for my condition? Or this will help temporarily?

What is the permanent solution?

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Regular physiotherapy is needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Can be related to sciatica. Muscle relaxant and pain killers are temporary solutions. You need to do regular physiotherapy exercises to make a more stretchable spine and to decrease the further progression of the problem.
Hope my answer is helpful.
