Posted on Thu, 12 May 2016
Question: Hi
My wife is in 2nd month of her pregnancy. He is having severe toothache. We visited a dentist. He is saying that condition of her teeth is very bad. She needs RCT for one teeth, feeling in 10 teeth and removal of one teeth which is beyond repair.
But at this stage she cannot be given antibiotics and pain killer so the teeth cannot be removed, which is the main reason for pain. Whether there is any treatment or method to delay the removal of the teeth after the delivery of baby. What are the options available considering the stage of pregnancy.
Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Safer medication is the only option..

Detailed Answer:
Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain in case if your wife is in second week of pregnancy and she is having severe toothache then as of now no dental treatment, dental x-ray and local anaesthesia cannot be given..

Therefore no chance of getting any treatment done..

The best way the treatment can be given is to get the antibiotics and painkillers that are safer in pregnancy as it is the best resort that can be done in the first trimester of pregnancy..

You can be advised to take Amoxicillin antibiotic and Acetaminophen painkiller as these are safer in pregnancy..
You can however once consult your treating Gynaecologist before taking the same..

If there is still no improvement and pain is unbearable, then you can take a consent with the Gynaecologist and during the second trimester of pregnancy
[ 4th to 6th month], dental treatment can be done as second trimester is considered safer for dental treatment if there are no other complication in pregnancy..

Any further questions are welcome..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.

Thank u for your advisse.
If the treatment or removal of teeth is done in 2nd trimester, then the medicine used at that time will have what kind of harmful affect on baby. If the treatment is postpone further, whether it will have any adverse affect on baby and mother both. Whether clove oil and mouth wash can be used under present circumstatnce. Whether use of these have any adverse affect on fetus.

clove oil in limits and alcohol free mouthwash..

Hi..
Welcome Again..

Thanks for the query..

As per your query, most commonly extraction is avoided during pregnancy..
Treatment can however be given with proper precautions and under consent and supervision of your gynaecologist..

If done with proper precautions, it is safe..
But still I would suggest that until it is an emergency do not go for treatment till her delivery of baby..

Clove oil can be used for tooth ache but should be taken only after proper precautions that should not contain other synthetic products and not to use in excess..

Mouthwash can be used that is alcohol free and contains natural ingredients to avoid any harmful effect of fetus and mother both..

Brief Answer:
Alcohol free mouthwash, Sensodyne only if there is sensitivity..

Detailed Answer:
Hi..
Welcome Again..

As per your query we are not allowed to promote any brand names of medicines here but just to help you I can tell that you can use Listerine alcohol free formulation or Alcohol free Chlorohexidine mouthwash..
But avoid swallowing it ..

Sensodyne is a desensitizing toothpaste and should be used only if there is sensitivity in teeth..
Pain will not resolve with it..

But still intimate your Gynaecologist as she knows her entire medical history and present condition, so consulting with her is must..

Regards.

Her doctor is saying that with Root Canal Treatmemt and filling some of the teeth can be saved. Please advise will RCT and filling have adverse affect on developing fetus at this stage or it should be delayed till delivery of baby.

Brief Answer:
Can be done in second trimester, only if it is emergency..

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Welcome Again..

As per your query, in case if there is an emergency, then only root canal treatment should be done, although filling can be done without any problem..

Root canal treatment needs anaesthesia therefore it is generally avoided in pregnancy to avoid any deleterious effects..

I would like to know that did she take the medicines and if yes what is the response of the medication??
Is there any pain or discomfort still present?
Is there any improvement or there is increase in pain or swelling on face?

Kindly revert back with reply..
