Question : Yes, I just had a laminotomy on Friday. Ever since, I have had the worst pain imaginable shooting down the back of my legs clear down to my feet. I can hardly move without excruciating pain. I actually went to the emergency room last night it was so bad. I have never had anything even approaching this pain--even childbirth!! I have a lot of things I want to do in my life but am afraid I am going to be one of the "failed" cases! I can't live like this! I am taking Methocarbamol 500 mg. and Hydromorphone Hcl 2 mg. Any suggestions? Thanks! Holly Mehawich

Brief Answer:
Wait and observe, supportive care

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. Laminotomy done on friday is just 3 days back and the pain could just be sequelae of any surgical intervention as bed rest of at least 1 month is advised to get things going. I am sure its not a failed case, its just too early for the pain to subside. Even if the decompression takes place, the pain on the pinched nerve is due to inflammation and damage done due to compression and that takes time to heal. If it may help, i had spine surgery too, i was in pain for 6 months gradually decreasing, i continuously used pain killers like tylenol etc and finally after 6 months i am mobilised like a normal human being. You should rest, lie flat as much as possible, don't bend or stoop and avoid lifting heavy weights. Do physiotherapy session after a few weeks of surgery once sutures are out and hang in there. Its too early for labelling it a failed procedure when it has more than 90 % of success rate. Continue taking pain killers and wait and see.

I hope it helps. take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.

Khan
