Posted on Tue, 31 Jan 2017
Question: Hi there, my mother is 84 and is having tremors with very low fever. Tremors come and go during the day. Her labs are ok, lungs are ok. She does have swollen and red knee and she has difficulties walking. I wander where the tremors may be coming from, and also what is the best way to lower the fever if patient is elderly.

Brief Answer:
Thyroid may be the culprit.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Tremor is a common sign of aging in some people, but in your mother's case, since there is low fever and thyroid nodules, hyperthyroidism (high thyroid gland function) should be considered.

It is necessary for lab tests to evaluate the thyroid gland function, if abnormal function is found (abnormal values of TSH, and T3), getting treated for this condition should result in improvement of tremor and low fever too.

Low fever may be related to swollen and red knee (hemarthrosis for example), so, the knee also should be evaluated by an Orthopedic surgeon.

If these conditions are excluded after the evaluation as possible causes of low fever, treatment with paracetamol or ibuprofen to lower it may be sufficient.

Hope you found the answer helpful.
