Question: I am a 23 year old female and have been attempting to have sex with my husband for a year and a half. However, due to pain in my vagina, a pain I can only describe as someone trying to push a large object into a small opening and then hitting a wall, we have been unsuccessful. we have tried lubs, various methods of foreplay etc. bit nothing seems to work. would numbing gel be a good option?

Brief Answer:
It is possible to get some help but unlikely

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

From the available description it appears that you have vaginismus a condition characterised by involuntary contraction of outer one third of vagina.

Here the cause is not extra sensation which can be numbed with use of local anaesthetic so there is little role of numbing gel, if any. However anti anxiety medications can help to some extent in this condition. I mean to say that there is little hope, if any with the numbing gel.

I understand you tried various methods of foreplay but I will request to do it following way.

Have a good foreplay and ask your husband to refrain from trying penetrative sex but only use finger or other smaller objects once you feel there is lubrication. Have this regularly for a period of 15 days and than use somewhat larger objects or two fingers. Again after 15 days have a talk with me for next course of action.

I hope this helps you.

Is it possible that if I do use a numbing gel, I wouldn't feel the pain and that would reduce the chances of the spasm? If yes, the. Which gel do you recommend?

Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for reverting back to me.

I am sorry to inform you that this does not work in practical situations although theoretically appears sound option to have intercourse.

Yes doc it does, thank you. So what are the alternatives to an anti anxiety pill? Or are there any OTC anti anxiety pills available?

Brief Answer:
I think you need to what I suggested

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for reverting back to me.

I understand that you have more faith in medicines but as I said above medicines are last resort and unlikely to have permanent effect.

AT this stage I will request you to follow instructions provided above with full effort and report back to me with outcome details after one month.

This is because there is more role of behavioural methods and little effect of medications.

I hope this helps you further.
Thanks again.
