Brief Answer:
Surgery will provide Pain Relief in Lumbar Canal Stenosis / Disc Prolapse

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome to HealthCareMagic.com I am Dr.J XXXXXXX Anto Bruno Mascarenhas, and I am here to help you. I have read your question with care and understand that you brother has spinal stenosis in L2-L3 and pain killers are not of much use.

The condition from which he suffers is called as Lumbar Canal Stenosis. What happens is that due to various reasons, the Spinal Canal and the Foramina (these are holes through which nerve roots come out of spinal canal) are narrowed

This causes compression on the nerve roots. In addition, this narrowing also compresses the blood vessels in that area and hence oxygen delivery as well as removal of waste materials from the nerves are affected.

Hence the patient has very severe pain. Pain killers are rarely useful. Even with pain killers, there will be much pain.

The Best Treatment for this condition are Surgical Procedures called Laminectomy, Fenestration, Foraminotomy etc. These are surgeries in which we remove a part of the bone and the compression is relieved. Hence the pressure over the nerves, arteries and veins are reduced and the pain gets relieved. If there is a disc prolapse, the prolapsed disc is also removed during the surgery

These are fairly safe surgical procedures with very little complications. You can ask your brother to consult a Neurosurgeon for evaluation.

Pain Killers (Tablets, Injections, Patches) or Epidural Steroid all provide temporary relief. Surgery is the treatment of choice

Hope you found the answer helpful.
