Suggest Remedy For Addiction To Cola In An Elderly Person

Posted on Mon, 12 Oct 2015
Question: I have been diagnosed with chronic migraine, fibromyalgia, neuropathy, and now brachioradial pruritus, and prurigo nodularis. I could go out of my mind sometimes with all types of pain, discomfort, and total fatigue. I really feel the only thing I can do to help myself is diet and exercise. I can start walking as soon as I get a pair of sneakers, as I have tendinitis in my ankles and I can relearn better eating habits by reading the many books I have. Where I feel like a complete failure is in my addiction to sugary colas. I feel GOOD on them. Full of energy, at least on the first three or so of the day. I have read the warnings of diabetes, heart attack, stroke, and, just recently nerve damage as a result of too much sugar and white grain products. I totally believe I can make the changes, but I crave the very cold cola. I truly believe I am slowly killing myself, or at least shortening my life by many years. I guess this boils down to two questions. Am I fooling myself or will it make any difference if I start the changes and I'm still addicted to 5-6 colas a day? And second HOW have people quit? I get a weak, fatigued, depressed, feeling when I try. PLEASE, please help where you can. Thank you in advance. XXXXXXX age 71.

Brief Answer:
Soda and health

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

You correctly identify soda as a health risk. Drinking 5-6 a day puts you at risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, headaches, and gastrointestinal disease. You're asking for help stopping. I can assure you that you can stop if you really try. Some things that might help avoid the withdrawal symptoms you describe are replacing soda with another caffeinated beverage like tea or coffee. Caffeine is actually healthy in moderation, it is the sugary/carbohydrate elements of soda that are dangerous. Also try cutting down a soda or two a day for about 2-4 weeks at a time before decreasing again. These are a couple strategies for you.
