Brief Answer:
You may have a bad case of reflux esophagitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thank you for using Healthcare Magic. It sounds like you might have a severe case of reflux esophagitis, also known as GERD. What happens is the valve from the esophagus into the stomach doesn't close properly, and acid from the stomach backflows up into the esophagus and into the mouth. From there it can be aspirated into the lungs and cause the choking and drowning feelings you experienced.

One of the recommendations made to people with GERD is not to have late meals. The food fills the stomach and when you lie down to sleep, it is easier for the stomach acid to go up into the esophagus and throat. Recommendations are also made for putting the head of the bed up on blocks so that gravity works when you are sleeping to keep the food and acid in the stomach where it belongs.

You mention you were on Nexium in the past. This is often used for GERD, so I wonder if you have had this condition for awhile and it is getting worse.

If you haven't already, it would be a good idea to see a gastroenterologist and get an upper endoscopy to look at your stomach and esophagus. They could determine if you have GERD or some other condition. Also chronic GERD can be associated with precancerous changes in the esophagus that the doctor could detect and biopsy.

In the meantime, avoid eating late and eat smaller meals. You could try Nexium again. But it is important to see a gastroenterologist with these symptoms, especially at your age.

Hope this answers your query. If you have further questions, I would be happy to answer them.
