Question: I have a constant cough that has increased in the last three months. This cough upsets my stomach and makes me vomit phlegm or constant dry heaves. This is happenining almost every day. I get nausea and cold sweats. I am 79 years old. The phlegm seems to come from my stomach rather than my lungs. My doctor gave me an inhaler to use before bed, however I get nausea and vomiting whether I use it or not. I do not sleep restfully. I also take 4 mg per night of requipt for constant restless legs.

Brief Answer:
Medicine side effects and respiratory tract infection needs attention.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for consulting me at virtual clinic. Your trust in HCM means a lot to me as a Physician.
I have completely reviewed your health query, and can well realize all those concerns. Being your physician, I will take care all of them today and will give extend my expertise to solve the problems.

I feel really sorry for the health issues you have to face right now. It is manageable and you need not worry much.

Probabilities:-
Much of your problems are due to Requip side effects. Your nausea, vomiting, cold sweats, an episode of urinary infections, restlessness and sleep issues are all due to adverse effects of Requip (Ropinirole).
Rest of the symptoms you have are due to respiratory tract infection (RTI).

Management:-
Your treating physician needs to review your medications and remove/replace Requip.

For RTI, you need to consult a Pulmonologist for complete evaluation who will need to go for diagnostic tests including some radiologic testing and will consider the following medications (some are prescription drugs, some are over the counter remedies):
Azithromycin if you are not allergic to it, is an antibiotic and given once daily.
Fexofenadine for allergic symptoms and peaceful sleep.
Mucolytics and Cough syrup.
Montelukast Sodium.
Ibuprofen for inflammation relief.
Salbutamol inhaler for peaceful respiration.

You need to keep in your room a Warm Mist Vaporizer with Vicks Pads in it for a soothing respiration and restful sleep.
Take nebulization with plain water.
Gargles with Lukewarm water with salt added in it. Also do nasal douches with the same water.
Keep the headboard end of the bed elevated. Don't increase number of pillows. Just keep the headboard elevators to raise it from 15 to 30 degrees to aid in respiration.
