Suggest Remedy For Constipation After Using Barium

default
Posted on Fri, 25 Sep 2015
Question: Had CT scan of abdomen with barium this morning. Feel like getting constipated.

Took 2 tablespoons of milk of magnesia at. 1:30pm. No result. Many years ago had a barium test, got extremely constipated and had to go to ER.
What should I do?
Thank you

Brief Answer:
Wait and see.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. Barium sulfate is notorious for constipation and should be taken care of at an earliest convenience. Plenty of fluids intake and soft diet rich in fiber along with addition of some laxatives will help. methylcellulose, psyllium, calcium polycarbophil and guar gum are fiber rich sources. You tried milk of magnesia which is osmotic diuretic. Try some lubricant as mineral oil or stool softeners like colace or surfak.

Do some exercise and Wait for 48 hours to get the defecation done if it does not come then go to ER they will give you some transrectal enemas and you will pass the stools.

I hope it helps. No worries it happens almost all the time and self resolves once barium is out of the system.

I hope it helps. take good care of yourself and don't forget to close the discussion please.

Khan
