Suggest Remedy For Constipation When On Miralax

Question: I was hospitalized for dehydration and rhabdomyalsis the first week of March and it was suspected I had pancreatitis. The CT scan was OK, but blood work showed elevated CPKs (4,000). Enzymes were elevated. I have Sjogrens, Fibromyalgia, non-alcoholic fatty liver, gastroparisis, IBS-C, and heart palpitations. I had severe vomiting and explosive diarrhea right before I was admitted. I stayed 6 days hooked to IVs.

Two days after I was released I was admitted again for five days for pancreatitis. I had another scan, MRI, blood work, and a upper GI scope. My GI doctor handled all and concluded I had pancreatitis that was responding to fluids, gastritis, bile in stomach, and constipation. I was prescribed provolax for reflux, carafate, and miralax.

My diet is mainly liquids and soft foods to help settle down GI tract. I've had follow up appoints and even on trip to ER when pain under left rib with nausea worried me that I was relapsing. I was given round of IV fluids, CT scan, and blood work. Tests showed things were OK (enzymes still a little elevated) and that I was constipated. ER Dr gave me prescription for Bentyl to help with pain. Throughout all of this my abdomen is swollen tight and I stay constipated. I have added corrector, stool softener, and even did a bottle of magnesium citrate that only produced one loose bowl movement and then I went back to being constipated. That was 5 days ago. Since March 2 I have only had 1 other loose bowl movement, and 3 small hard pellets. I also have been vomiting acid.

My GI started me on 290 mcg of Linzess along with Miralax twice a day and told me to take additional laxatives to get cleaned out. 24+ hours later - nothing except pain is getting worse and my belly is swollen as tight as ever. I'm worried that I have a blockage or something. My GI said if this didn't help in a couple of days to call and we see about a lower GI scope. I am so miserable - thoughts?

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Following advice

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

1. Usually, patients do have problems with bowel movements after pancreatitis attack. This is because of :
- following intestinal paresis and constipation
- lack of digestive enzymes and diarrhea

2. With regards to blockage you feel to have, may I know if you are able to pass gas? If yes, then no need to worry about blockage.

you can continue using lactulose safely but remember that the effects of laxatives wil take time to appear.

do not forget to increase water intake and follow a liquid diet.

Hope it was of help!
