Question: My husband was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection about 10 days ago. Completed the antibiotic and and did not seem any better. He went back this last Monday and they gave him a steroid shot. The cough is not productive. When he feels the cough coming on he tries to take a breath breaths they are little short breaths like he can't get a good and his middle stomach area shakes. He says his throat is raw which is evidenced by some blood in what little he does cough up. What do we do to relieve this weird breathing/cough?

Brief Answer:
Try some of the medication as advised.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for the query.
It seems that he may have developed lower respiratory tract infection with increased airway hyperreactivity. If there were history of previous lung diseases it might have exacerbated.

Tab azithromycin can be tried if not taken earlier. Tab N acetyl cysteine 600 thrice daily may ease his cough. Also take inhaler salbutamol /beclomethasone 1puff as needed. All these are prescription drugs and need to be taken under the supervision of his doctor. Please discuss with the doctor about the same.

Hopefully he will recover.

Best wishes
