Question: Dear Doctor,
My Daughter will turn 2 in 2 months. I worry as she wont make an attempt to speak. She says a few words, but that's about it. Should I worry ?

Brief Answer:
If not delayed in other fields then do not worry and keep trying.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I completely understand your concerns but don't worry. Many kids show such variations in speech development.

If your child is not doing the following, then you may approach a speech therapist for proper evaluation and management:
-isn't using gestures, such as pointing or waving bye-bye
-prefers gestures over vocalizations to communicate always
-has trouble imitating sounds
-has difficulty understanding simple verbal requests
-can only imitate speech or actions and doesn't produce words or phrases spontaneously
-says only certain sounds or words repeatedly and can't use oral language to communicate more than his immediate needs
-can't follow simple directions
-has an unusual tone of voice (such as raspy or nasal sounding)
-is more difficult to understand than expected for his age
- delayed in any other field like gross and fine motor, social interaction.

If he is fine in the above, then you may just keep stimulation for speech development by communicating well to him. Hopefully this will help him to gain proper speech by 30 months of age.

Hopefully this will help you. I would be happy to help you in any further questions.
