Posted on Mon, 28 Dec 2015
Question: My mother is 69 years old. She was a patient of dipression (that caused due to death of my younger brother in 1993). From 1995 onwards she is on anti-dipression drugs. In XXXXXXX 2004 after a review the doctor stopped the medicines. But after 2 month it revived again and the medicines had to be re-started. Since then she has been taking Olanz 2.5 and Dicorate ER 750 daily. She has been showing perfect behaviour. She is normal but she has gain weight very much (though she has a little diet). A recent Sodium Valporate level test shows normal levels well within the range. She is also a sugar patient and takes Trixer 1.5 for that. Also takes Telma 40 for Blood pressure problem. Blood Sugar and BP are controlled. The anti dipression drugs are well known for weight gaining. Can we reduce the doasages of Olanz and Dicorate medicine to stop gaining weight?

Brief Answer:
Stop Oleanz.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to HCM.
I can understand your concerns for your mother.

As her behavior is normal now, I would suggest that her her Oleanz tablet be stopped now.

Oleanz can cause huge weight gain and precipitate diabetes as well.

You can observe her behavior after stopping Oleanz. If she stays fine, consider reducing dose of dicorate then.

Kindly discuss this with your doctor.

Hope this helps.
Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Wait for two weeks.

Detailed Answer:
The deterioration in behavior, if any, may begin within a week of stopping Oleanz.

Still, I would suggest you to wait for at least two before making any dose changes of dicorate.

Hope this helps.
Thanks.
