Suggest Remedy For Fibroblastoma On The Aortic Valve
Question: Hi, I have a large (+1cm) fibroblastoma on the aortic valve. One doc said "you have probably had it for years. We will monitor it. Another Doctor recommended surgery, open heart surgery. I think there are other options. Please tell me what you know.

I read your question and i understand your concern. Papillary fibroelastoma is a tumor of heart and vasculature. The treatment of ti is for sure controversial as some prefer conservative approach and others prefer aggressive by surgically excising it. That mostly depends on location, the tumors in aorta like your case are easy to excise by minimal invasive techniques and should be performed.
These tumors increase the odds of thrombo emboli and atrial fibrillation which give you one more reason to get rid of it by surgical excision. How ever you would need a clean chit from your anesthesia experts as age of 74 with atrial fibrillation history makes you a high risk candidate for anesthesia.
No open heart surgery i would advise. If they can do it by minimal invasive fine other wise your previous doctor who mentioned conservative approach sounds wiser.
n your case of aortic valve involvement, excision of the tumor is often valve-sparing, meaning that replacement of the valve with a prosthetic valve is not necessary. Repair of the native valve with a pericardial patch has been described. So no worries even if it is surgery but make sure its the least invasive one unlike open heart surgery for a single aortic tumor.
