Suggest Remedy For Flu, Chest Congestion And Sinus Infection

Posted on Fri, 13 Mar 2015
Question: I had the flu starting Saturday, aches Sunday and Monday, sinus and a little chest congestion and a little fever Sunday/Monday. Yesterday I just felt mainly run down with a little congestion still. Today however I am still a little run down and congested but better than yesterday but I feel like some one has punched me in the stomach. I am burping and think it might be gas, but I don't usually get this feeling when I am gassy or from the flu for that matter. Is this stomach pain something to be concerned about or just the flu working its way through my system?

Brief Answer:
Probably the flu. Please provide more details

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

it is true that the flu may cause gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea and mild stomach upset. Did you take any drugs? Sometimes drugs you may take for the fever or to feel better cause side effects to the stomach (ibuprofen, for example). It may feel like you're burning inside or it may be just painful.
How long does it last or is it constant? Is there anything that makes it better or worse?

The most likely explanation is that the virus itself causes it to you, but providing as many details as you can, may help me suspect other potential causes.

Kind Regards!

I have not taken anything other than 1 tylenol the day before yesterday when my fever was most noticable. I don't take medications for colds or flus or even a headache. And I am on no prescribed medication and haven't been for years. Its not burning. Its a dull ache like I got punched in the stomach only not as severe as if I was really punched. It hurts a little worse if I stretch and arch my back. I'm pretty sure its gas but was concerned it could be a stomach infection as it doesn't feel like the typical sharp gas pains and is lasting all day. And I probably have been swallowing alot of mucus from post nasal drip from the flu. Any gas pains I have had in the past were sharp pains and lead rather quickly to burping or farting and the pain went away. This is a dull pain nagging me for 14 or 15 hours now and I am burping alot but it's not going away. I just don't want to take pepto or tums if its going to aggravate it more.

Brief Answer:
It could be the flu

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

influenza may cause the stomach pain and this is the most likely scenario.
Abdominal pain that's constant and lasts for more than 6 hours warrants clinical examination by a doctor. Since you're young and healthy (haven't mentioned any medical history) the odds are that the virus is causing everything but more serious causes should be excluded.

In most cases using a prokinetic drug may relieve the symptoms. If you're passing gas and you haven't had any black stool then this is safe to use.

I hope you find my answer helpful!
