Suggest Remedy For High Blood Pressure And Insomnia

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Feb 2016
Question: I have insomnia, can't sleep at night and take several cat naps during the day. My doctor suggested I take 10 mg of melatonin. Tonight was my second night taking it. The first night I fell asleep with no problem but only slept for one hour, the same thing tonight. I am a 73 year old female with high blood pressure which is under control with medication. Is it safe to take more than 10 mg of melatonin in order to stay asleep longer?

Brief Answer:
You can take 20 mg but it may not help

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. I can understand your concern.

Melatonin as such is used in 10 mg dose for sleep. It can be taken in higher dose as it is herbal supplement. You can try up to 15 to 20 mg. If you have good sleep with that it will be good.

However according to my experience it may not help. In that case first try to follow some measures called 'sleep hygiene' which would help in sleep. You can find the same in below link.

Drinking a cup of warm milk before going to bed helps in 30-40% of patients and they do not need medicines as per my clinical experience.

Other option is Benadryl. It can help in sleep as it is anti histamine.

Last option is benzodiazepine group of drug. You can ask your doctor for the same as these are prescription drugs.

Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further.
Regards,
