Question: Hello,

I am having body temperature in the range of 101-102 since last night. The temperature is constantly in this range regardless of whether I take paracetamol or not, even though I sweat. What could be the reason? I am aslo having throat pain.

Brief Answer:
anti-pyretics with anti-inflammatory combination drugs.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

Throat pain with fever are the symptoms of upper respiratory infection.

Majority of cases of throat pain are due to viral infection, but in some cases it is related to bacterial infection (like streptococcal pharyngitis) but it is slightly difficult to say clinically (whether it is viral or bacterial) and without appropriate blood investigations.

The infective component could be the reason behind your fever which is not subsided yet even after taking paracetamol.

So,if I would have your treating doctor,I would like to differentiate the cause through routine blood counts (CBS,ESR),peripheral smear for malaria parasite and throat examination with pharyngoscopy to rule out infective causes.

So,you can go for some routine blood works if not done yet.

1) You should take antibiotics from which quinolones (levofloxacin) would be preferred) to prevent super infection even if the cause is viral.

However, antibiotics are not usually required in case of viral infection but if you would take it then there will be no issue, rather it would certainly help you to resolve from this throat symptoms and fever quickly.

2) Take anti-pyretics with anti-inflammatory combination (paracetamol + ibuprofen) drugs available over the counter which will be much beneficial rather than taking just paracetamol alone.

You can take this drugs to reduce fever until you go for blood tests and yes, antibiotics must be started after giving blood sample, doing so may interfere with blood counts results.

3) Nebulization with steam inhalation 2 to 3 times daily and warm salt water gargles which will also be helpful for symptomatic relief.

4) Take multivitamins like vitamin B complex with folic acid daily once.

For antibiotics, you will need a prescription from some local doctor or GP and rest of other medicines will be available over the counter.

Hope this will help you, feel free to ask if you have more questions.

Thanks and Regards,
