Question : I started having heavy irregular periods back in February 2013 but put it down to having a minor surgery due to abnormal cells being detected after a smear... but this went on for a number of months and then noticed I felt hot a good bit of the time (normally I feel the cold) .. then my periods became eratic but when they came they would be heavy and then light and short.... I went for blood tests middle of last year and it was confirmed I was in perimenopause... I asked him what should I be doing? was there anything I should be concerned about and he said come back to him if I had any issues... which told me nothing... I didn't know what I should expect... my mother had a hysterectomy so she couldn't help and im the oldest girl in my family... I havnt had a period now for at least probably three or four months... I cant recall because I didn't understand the significance in this... until looking up a website... so I havnt kept a log... I am in a new relationship but am not on the pill... I have a pill prescription but don't know when I should take it as I have no cycle at the moment..... my normal cycle would be roughly end of one month/beginning of the next... I aslo had my bloods checked independently and it was noted that my white blood cell count: monocytes were 3.8 and my mean cell volume and iron were low (iron 26.2) and total protein 61 and globulin 18 (low I think).. hdl at 1.1, LDL 4.0 ... can you advise on this please...

Brief Answer:
Dont start on pills

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I understand your concerns about perimenopause transition.

As of now don't start the pills if you have no symptoms and you are fine. Pills are needed only if you have symptoms of menopause like hot flushes etc... Otherwise you don't need HRT pills.

As per your blood tests you have anemia and decreased proteins. You need to start on iron suppliments soon to improve your condition. Have food rich in iron and protein. I suggest you to meet a regular Internal medicine doctor or Primary care for detailed diagnosis and treatment plan.

I hope your doubts is cleared. Let me know if you need any more clarifications.

Thank you Dr XXXXXXX for clarifying my blood results... with regard to the pills I mentioned in my query, I probably didn't clarify enough, I have the Contraceptive Pill prescription but am not sure if I should use it, I am in a new relationship and am anxious not to get pregnant,
I have no menstrual cycle at the moment so I am not sure when I should take the Contraceptive pill to ensure I do not get pregnant, the pill name is Noriday.. can you advise when I can take it ..

many thanks

Brief Answer:
Dont take noriday

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for additional information.

Since you are 49 and going through perimenopause/ Menopausal changes, there is no chance of pregnancy.

Therefore I suggest don't use any pills like noriday. You can have sexual intercourse without fear of pregnancy.

I hope your doubt is cleared now.

Let me know if you need any more clarifications.
