default
Posted on Tue, 12 Jan 2016
Question: I have had swollen lymph nodes for almost 3 week only on the right side of my neck. Then the pain started going into my ear. i went to a walk in they said maybe i had an ear infection. I took amoxicillian clavulantate for nine days. Last sunday I ended up in the emergency room for severe neck pain from lymph nodes. I had blood work done 3 days ago my white count was normal. I had all my teeth exrayed to see if i had anything mouth related. No. Now i am coughing and have chest pain. i am not a sick person. But i have been on antibotics 3 times in the last month for bladder- uterine infection. i am a 52 year old female. What is my next course of action? I think my immune system is depleted because of all the antibotics.

Brief Answer:
can take weeks to return to normal

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The fact that the white cell count was normal would essentially rule of leukemia/lymphoma as a potential cause of the enlarged lymph nodes, so this is good.

The other causes would be infection or inflammation in the area the lymph nodes drain or infection/inflammation of the lymph nodes themselves.

Coughing may indicate a new cough/cold infection or the flu. If you have a history of post nasal drip or reflux, this can also cause coughing as well (post nasal drip is the most common cause of persistent coughing for weeks)

If it is a new infection, it means that the lymph nodes would stay enlarged for a little longer.

It can take 4 to 6 weeks for lymph nodes to return to their normal size, since you may have a new infection, this would now be extended further.

Using anti inflammatory medication would help eg naproxen, ibuprofen, voltaren, ketoprofen. One of these would reduce the pain and inflammation of the nodes

Summary: (1) can take up to 4 to 6 weeks after an acute infection has gone for lymph nodes to return to normal

(2)use anti inflammatory pain , monitor for change in size

(3)can consider cough medication if cough bothersome

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
