Question: I was recently diagnosed with PTSD and depression and was put on the antidepressant Wellbutrin which totally erased my appetite. I was wondering what your recommendation was for a diet since I have no desire to eat at all. Thanks.

I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what you are going through.

However I would require a couple of more details to help you in answering your query in a better justified way.

1. Since how long are you having depression?
2. Since how long are you on welbutrin?
3. Since when has the appetite reduced.?

Well the depression has been for the last 30 years but it was only recently diagnosed as a side effect of chronic PTSD which is also been about 30 years. I have only been on the Wellbutrin for a week but my appetite has been reduced for 2 months and I have lost 35 pounds. Thanks.
Also this is my fifth antidepressant because all of the rest made me horribly nauseous and I was unable to hold down any food for days until I stopped the medication. I am apparently unable to handle SSRI or SNRIs. Thanks.

I kind of went off the deep end diet wise. I stopped sugar, caffeine, carbohydrates and dairy. I am mainly eating protein and vegetables but thought maybe I should add some bread or other carbs to help with the nausea. Thanks again.

Brief Answer:
Its very unfortunate

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Its really very unfortunate that you were not able to tolerate the SSRI or the SNRI which are good drugs for PTSD anbd depression. Nevertheless even bupropion is a good drug. YOur loss of appetite is not related to bupropion as it started way before this medicine was started.
I would suggest that let bupropion act on you as its been a very short duration. You should give it atleast 3-4 weeks time. Further the dose should also be upto 300mg.
For appetitte I would suggest that you should try Tab Cyproheptadine 2mg twice a day as an appetite stimulator. The other option is adding your medication with low dose olanzapine like 5mg. This will help in treating resistant depression and will also increase your appetite and weight.
I would suggest you discuss these options with your treating psychiatrist.
Hope this helps.
In case if you have any further query, do let me know.
Kind regards
Dr. Srikanth Reddy
