Posted on Thu, 12 Nov 2015
Question: My daughter is 26 years old. On Sunday evening she said her mouth was sore and she had a rash on the inside of her mouth. On Monday morning the rash was worse and her lymph nodes and underneath her jaws were swollen. On Tuesday she was seen by two Physician's Assistants who said they had never seen anything like this before. They checked for hand, foot and mouth disease, mono and she had a blood workup. White blood count was abnormally high. (22 I believe) Also her lymphytes were high. Today she has red spots on her uvula and white sores under her tongue

Throat infection; throat swab for culture to be done

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for posting your query in healthcaremagic.com
This is Dr. Swarnava dattagupta answering your query.

I understand your concern.
From the history, it seems like your daughter has got throat infection leading to the symptoms and enlarged lymph nodes. The cause can be various, among which bacterial cause is the most common. The high WBC count points to the same too. The presentation might vary in all cases of throat infection , hence other causes of sore throat have to be ruled out too. When patients present to me with such symptoms, I generally advise the following-

Avoid cold or chilled food and beverage.
Warm saline water gargling four times a day.
Antibiotics like coamoxyclav for 5 days.
Proper mouth care.
Antiallergics like fexofenadine or levocetrizine if there is much sneezing, running nose etc.
A throat swab for culture sensitivity.
Complete blood count.

You can consult the above with your family or treating doctor and get these prescribed.
You can get back to me with the reports; also an ENT specialist might be consulted.

Hope i have answered your question.
If you have any further questions i will be happy to help.
Regards.

She is scheduled to see her doctor in the morning. Other than the throat culture, what other questions should she ask?
Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Follow as advised

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
I guess she should give a thorough history of her problem so that it becomes easy for her doctor to get an initial idea. Afterwards, after clinical examination, he/she will be able to come to a diagnosis and will give treatment accordingly.
Dont worry.
Apart from the culture, she might ask about the restrictions she has to follow. The medicine part will be taken care of by the doctor.

Hope this helps.
Regards.
