Question: My 78 year old mother has stopped eating (food smells bad to her), nauseated, refuses to drink water because she's not thirsty, complains of constant headache, pain in her right arm, memory loss (Dr. recently prescribed 5mg Aricept), She was diagnosed with diverticulitis a few years ago and now complains of bloating, lower abdominal/vaginal pain. She's scheduled for a Endoscopy next week. What can this be? Thank You

Brief Answer:
She probably has diverticulitis!

Detailed Answer:
HI and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about what your mom is going through. I have reviewed the information fully and this is suggestive of diverticulosis. This happens when there are outward protrusions from the walls of the large intestines. This is the most likely explanation for her abdominal and vaginal pains as well as the symptoms of digestive upset such as bloating, nausea, etc.

However, vomiting, nausea and loss of appetite are typical side effects of aricept. The doctor might also want to review this drug as it might be on elf the possible causes of her symptoms and even more likely so.

I hope this sheds some light on your mom’s health. Let me know if you need more information and clarifications. I wish her well.
