Question : I have slight to moderate swelling of my ankles (left more than right) that shows up at night & dissipates by morning. I am 80 and otherwise in excellent health for my age.

I share your concerns about the illness you have in spite of maintaining good health even at this age. I wish you good health.
In my opinion swelling in your ankles is due to age related changes in old age. In old age heart becomes less effective and little slow. This will reduce the blood circulation, which is responsible for ankle swelling. It keeps on increasing through out the day and reachesto maximum in evening. Gravity is also responsible for this. . This swelling disappears in morning due to lying posture, as heart requires less efforts to circulate the blood.
Other possibility is vascular illness. Due to old age blood vessels lose their strength and unable to circulate blood effectively.
You need to visit your physician for basic blood work up and cardiac assessment to come to a diagnosis and treatment. You need to start treatment immediately as it may be a precondition for bigger illness related to heart.
