Question: is a sharp intermittent stinging, and more prolonged burning sensation on the skin in vicinity of moles / lesions a recognized indicator of melanoma and if so - at what stage of growth formation does it occur ?

Brief Answer:
This is not a melanoma indicator.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

No, this is not an indicator of melanoma.
Moles are benign lesions. Some of them (few percent) can become malignant. As we do not know which one will become malignant, we try to choose suspicious moles.
Suspicious mole means that it might be malignant, but again only in few percents.

We assume that the mole is suspicious (not malignant, just suspicious) when it changes shape, size, color, starts itching or burning. Generally when something new appears in the mole.

If you have burning mole, please consult dermatologist. Such mole has to be removed and tested by pathologist. This is more precaution than mole diagnosis. We remove such mole and almost always it is benign.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

if a mole has become malignant, generally how long after change begins to occur, does it take for the growth to breach the in situ epidermis of the skin?
weeks? months?

Brief Answer:
It rather takes weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Generally melanoma malignum is a kind of aggressive cancer. The cells multiply really fast. So we can say it usually takes weeks (not months) for the cancer to occur and affect deeper parts of the skin. Of course every cancer is different, some multiply faster, others multiply slower.
But in general, melanoma malignum is very fast growing cancer.
