Brief Answer:
Read below.

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and will try to give some info on possible causes.

It might have been helpful if you had given some more details such as location of pain, whether it is confined to the spine or it irradiates, is it still present, exacerbating factors, any traumatic event preceding it, any other symptom like weakness in the limbs, altered sensation, trouble urinating, fever etc.

Pain along the spine can be related to different factors like osteoporosis (common in women after menopause), degenerative arthritic changes in the spine, a disc herniation, a vertebral fracture, muscle spasm.
So if the pain is persisting if I was your doctor, apart from physical exam I would order at least an x-ray in two projections. Other imaging tests like MRI can be done, but whether it's necessary or not depends on physical exam findings.
In the meanwhile you can take over the counter pain killers like Ibuprofen.

I remain at your disposal for other questions.
