Question : Hello. My name is xxxxx. I have had IBS for several years. About three years ago, GI specialist took a biopsy after I had had several weeks of watery diarrhea and extreme weight loss and diagnosed Collagenous Colitis.
I have just recently had similar symptoms with 10 weeks of watery diarrhea an weight loss with a persistent pain in the lower right abdomen. I have had no appetite and when I do eat, After an hour or so, I have to have a bowel movement, always watery or very loose. It comes with extreme cramping and pain. My GI has prescribed Bentyl and Neuronton. They help but do not ease the pain. I have lost 25 lbs in the last 6 weeks. My Doc still believes it is IBS. How come so little is known about Collagenous Colitis? I am confused and not really sure what I really have and what I should treated for. Can you help? Thanks.

                                    Brief Answer:
Inflammatory bowel disease
Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Welcome and the query.
Collagenous colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and not IBS.
Your symptoms and weight loss fits in with the diagnosis. Have you been investigated for malabsorption syndrome which also presents in a similar manner?
You can take probiotics and imodium for symptomatic relief and discuss the use of 5 amino salicylic acid or Budesonide in the treatment.
Take care
